Thailand to distribute first 145 billion baht of handout scheme starting this month

THAILAND will distribute 145 billion baht (S$5.6 billion) of its “digital wallet” handout program earlier than scheduled to support vulnerable groups, a deputy finance minister said on Monday (Sep 9), stressing the need for short-term economic stimulus.

In remarks during a budget debate in the Senate, Julapun Amornvivat said the government has prepared 450 billion baht in total for its signature handout program, which seeks to stimulate economic activity by transferring 10,000 baht to 50 million Thais to spend in their localities.

The measure, which was scheduled for rollout in the last quarter of this year, is the cornerstone of Thailand’s plans to jumpstart South-east Asia’s second-largest economy, which grew 2.3 per cent in the second quarter.

A change in government last month, caused by a court’s shock removal of Srettha Thavisin as premier, has left uncertainty about when promised stimulus measures would commence.

Part of the handout will now be in cash, Srettha’s ally and successor, Paetongtarn Shinawatra said last week.

Finance official Julapun said 32 million people had registered so far for the program including vulnerable groups, but not those without smartphones, through which funds were due to be received via an application.
It was not immediately clear the first tranche of payments, which Julapun said would be made later in September and would be from the 2024 budget and other sources, would be in cash.

His remarks come after Paetongtarn, the daughter of politically influential billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, at the weekend promised to stimulate the economy right away and follow through on Srettha’s policy agenda.

Her new government published a policy statement on Sunday that Paetongtarn will deliver to parliament later this week.

Training on value-added livestock products, organized by the Myanmar Livestock Federation (MLF) and the Department of Livestock Development-DLD of Thailand, will be conducted in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in November, MLF reported.
The training will offer technical know-how on value-added dairy and meat products at the Livestock Product Research and Development Centre in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from 17 to 23 November 2024.
MLF is making efforts to effectuate the development of the livestock sector and ensure food security and food safety for the people ‌‌‌‌‌‌‌. The federation is joining hands with local and international organizations to enhance the value-added businesses on livestock products.
The professionals from Thailand will conduct practical and theoretical training. The Livestock Product Research and Development Centre adds new modules related to popular marketable items every year. The center also asks for ideas from the trainees as well. Trainees can visit recreation areas in Chiang Mai.
Trainees must bear the Yangon-Chiang Mai-Yangon flight cost, training fees and training materials.
Thanks to the negotiation of MLF and LPRDC, it is a customized course tailored to Myanmar trainees. The minimum number of trainees is 10 per course. Course modules and fees will be notified further. Training fees will be set at a much fairer rate.
Those who want to attend the training must have a passport with validity of six months at least on 16 November 2024.
