Magway Region sees brisk sales of cottonseed from gins

Cottonseed, which is an industrial crop, is in high demand from the mills, according to the Magway Region Government Office.
Most townships in the region cultivate cotton, which is 172,793 acres. Gangaw Township possesses only a handful of cotton acres.
Products obtained from grinding cottonseed are exported. The businesses of fried crispy bean fritters mostly buy mill-processing cotton seed oil.
Next, the Cotton Producers Association organized a coordination meeting on cotton supply chain development in early May. The meeting outcomes highlighted a loan plan jointly provided by the Ministry of Commerce, the Agriculture Department, the Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development, quality seed, agriculture methods and exemption of mandatory dollar conversion into local currency specified by the Central Bank of Myanmar upon exportation through Kawthoung-Ranong trade channel.
The Ministry of Industry will purchase three million visses of cotton in the current 2024-2025 financial year, including 2.9 million visses of A-grade cotton and 100,000 visses of C-grade cotton. — NN/KK

Life Style Vietnam 2024 welcomes Myanmar businesspeople

Vietnam Handicraft Exporter Association (VIETCRAFT) has invited the participation of Myanmar businesspeople to the Vietnam Home Décor and Gifts Fair (Life Style Vietnam 2024) that will be held on 18-21 October 2024 at Sky Expo Centre in Ho Chi Minh City, according to Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization. The fair will showcase Vietnam’s art and crafts, home décor, gifts, indoor and outdoor furniture, textiles, personal accessories, leather bags, toys, stationery and traditional products. The fair is expected to draw over 1,600 stands from domestic and international businesspeople engaged in the handicraft and furniture industry.
The living style of Vietnam attracted the attention of the exhibitors across over 30 countries. With the marketing team’s continuous efforts, more than 3,000 buyers from Vietnam will join the fair in addition to traditional customers from the USA, EU and Japan. The participation fee is set at $1,700 (one side open) per (3 metres by 3 metres by 2.5 metres) booth, $1,800 (two sides open) and $1,950 (three sides open), $2,100 (four sides open).

Myanmar hosts 18th ASEAN Working Group on Social Forestry Meeting

Myanmar hosted the 18th ASEAN Working Group on Social Forestry (AWGSF) Meeting virtually yesterday.
The director-general of the Forest Department spoke on the occasion that the fundamental objective of ASEAN cooperation in the social forestry sector is to enhance sustainable forest management for the continuous production of forest products and services in a balanced way.
Moreover, the meeting will finalize the manual book for Free, prior and informed consent (FPIC) for customary land ownership, and present the ASEAN cooperation in the social forestry sector, progresses in member countries, policies, laws, good practices and challenges, and the attendees should participate in the discussion cordially, he added.

State Economic Promotion Fund Management Committee holds 2nd coord meeting

The State Economic Promotion Fund Management Committee held its second coordination meeting in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
During the meeting, Committee Chairman Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Planning and Finance U Win Shein said the committee’s report between 1 October 2023 and 31 March 2024 has been submitted to the State Administration Council.
He then urged the committee members to scrutinize and review the issuance of capital investment, loans and repayment, suspension of capital/interest payment for certain regional conditions and Mocha, systematic inventory for loans in order to offer as per the financial procedures, work completions for 2022-2023 Financial Year of Union Auditor General Office and training courses in regions/states and self-administered regions/zones.

Kalaw tourism boost to uplift local economy

Development of Kalaw and its tourism will help the socioeconomy of the local community improve, according to a tourism development forum.
The Destination Management Organization plays a crucial role in effectuating destination development and sustainable tourism. All the stakeholders, including related departments, organizations, and tourism agencies, must exert concerted efforts to achieve this, as quoted Dr Thet Thet Khine, Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism, remarking at an event held on 24 May.
According to the UNWTO World Tourism Barometer, international tourist arrivals in 2023 rose worldwide by 34 per cent compared to that of 2022. Myanmar also saw a rebound in tourist arrivals.
Additionally, a strategic plan included in a three-year project to promote Kalaw’s destination (2022-2025) needs to be implemented. The DMO and locals must work together to bring about socio-economic development through tourism.
Kalaw attracts the second largest number of visitors among the cities in southern Shan State, and some also visit the Inlay Lake, Pindaya and other surrounding areas.

YGN palm oil wholesale reference rate sees small rebound this week ending 2 June

The wholesale reference rate of palm oil for the Yangon market was set higher a bit to K5,270 per viss this week ending 2 June from K5,200 recorded last week ending 26 May, according to the Supervisory Committee on edible oil import and distribution.
The Supervisory Committee on Edible Oil Import and Distribution under the Ministry of Commerce has been closely observing the FOB prices in Malaysia and Indonesia, adding transport costs, tariffs and banking services to decide the wholesale market reference rate for edible oil on a weekly basis.
Yet, the market price is higher than the reference price.
To control overcharging, the Consumer Affairs Department under the Ministry of Commerce informed the consumers of lodging the complaints for overcharging through the call centre’s hotline in late August. The department urged consumers not to buy palm oil at high prices.
The Committee notified that any person who is involved in price gouging and oil storage to attempt market manipulation will face legal action under the Essential Goods and Services Law.
The department is working together with the Myanmar Oil Dealers’ Association and the cooking oil importing companies to offer affordable rates of imported palm oil for consumers.
Complaints for overcharging can be lodged over hotline 1535 of the call centre of the Consumers Affairs Department or sent to the Facebook Page of the Department and the region and state departments concerned.
The domestic consumption of palm oil is estimated at one million tonnes per year. The local palm oil production is just about 400,000 tonnes. About 700,000 tonnes of palm oil are yearly imported through Malaysia and Indonesia to meet domestic demands. — NN/EM
