Tether acquires US$100 million stake in US listed Bitcoin miner Bitdeer

STABLECOIN issuer Tether Holdings has acquired a US$100 million stake in Bitdeer Technologies Group, the US-listed Bitcoin miner owned by Chinese billionaire Jihan Wu, with the option to purchase an additional US$50 million in shares within a year.

The two firms entered into a subscription agreement for a private placement of 18.6 million Class A ordinary shares, Bitdeer said in a statement on Friday (May 31), which generated US$100 million in gross proceeds. There was also a warrant to purchase up to five million additional shares at US$10 per share. The private placement closed on Thursday. Cantor Fitzgerald . acted as the placement agent.

The deal will fund an expansion of Bitdeer’s data centre operations, the development of ASIC-based crypto mining equipment, and other general corporate purposes, Bitdeer said. The companies did not reveal how much of Bitdeer Tether currently owns as per the agreement. Tether didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The agreement marks a major step forward for Tether in its plan to become a major Bitcoin miner, having begun construction of its own mining facilities in Uruguay, Paraguay, and El Salvador last year. The British Virgin Islands-incorporated company, which issues the world’s most used cryptocurrency, USDT, said in November that it planned to spend half a billion US dollars within six months on the effort.

Bitdeer is one of the largest public crypto miners listed in the US, with a market capitalization of around US$670 million. Headquartered in Singapore, Bitdeer has data centers in the US, Norway, and Bhutan. Shares of Bitdeer, which had slumped more than 40 percent this year, rose about 6.5 percent to US$6.20.

Bitdeer was previously in talks with private credit firms to arrange about US$100 million in financing, Bloomberg News reported in March. It was unclear if those discussions would remain ongoing following Tether’s injection.

Bitcoin mining involves the operation of power-hungry computers that secure the blockchain, earning new tokens as a reward. In April, these rewards were halved as part of a programmed upgrade to the Bitcoin network called “the halving,” which occurs every four years. In essence, the change made it about half as profitable to be a Bitcoin miner.

Conversely, Bitcoin’s price reached a record high in March, driven in part by optimism surrounding newly-launched spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the US. Bitcoin traded up around 0.7 percent at US$68,800 on Friday.

Hong Kong Fintech Week 2024 invites Myanmar businesspeople

Hong Kong Fintech Week 2024 (HKFTW 2024), organized by InvestHK, will take place from 28 October to 1 November 2024 at Asia World Expo, Hong Kong SAR. Myanmar businesspeople engaged in finance and technology are invited to explore business opportunities.
This FinTech expo will gather innovative tech solution providers overseas to showcase their services and solutions. It will feature conferences, exhibitions, networking events, demo shows, and study tours to companies in the Greater Bay Area and Hong Kong SAR.
Last 2023, HKFTW attracted over 35,000 participants from overseas. Therefore, the venue capacity is extended for this year’s HKFTW.
To encourage participation through governmental organizations, a Complementary Delegation Programme was arranged. A business delegate, including five to seven Fintech companies, will be provided with a 24-square-metre booth, and those with eight to ten companies will be allowed a 36-square-metre booth in order of application. That programme only covers the booth location, and they must bear the cost of setting up the booth.

CBM to sell US$5 million and Yuan 5 million for exporters and importers on online trading platforms

The Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM) sold US$5 million and five million yuan to exporters and importers on online trading platforms on 31 May 2024.
CBM sold 10 million yuan on 20 May, $5 million on 9 May, 2.5 million yuan on 7 May, and five million yuan and 30 million Thai baht on 2 May to exporters and importers through online trading platforms.
CBM injected $3 million, two million yuan and 54 million baht into the financial market in April. It also sold $18 million, 12 million yuan and 312 million baht in March, $77.38 million and 850 million baht in February and $68.33 million, 313.5 million baht and 4.2 million yuan in January 2024, with a view to curbing the instability in the foreign exchange market and stopping the currency devaluation.
According to CBM’s notification on 15 March, it has been joining hands with law enforcement agencies to combat and prosecute those who attempt to manipulate the currency market under the existing laws. CBM allowed authorized dealers (private banks) to operate online foreign exchange trading freely as per the market rate depending on supply and demand, starting from 5 December 2023. Additionally, the outward remittance procedures must adhere to the rules and regulations stipulated by the Foreign Exchange Supervisory Committee. — NN/KK

380 units of Thilawa and Kanaung Housing up for sale

A total of 380 apartment units from 11 buildings in Thilawa and Kanaung affordable housing complexes developed by the Department of Urban and Housing Development (DUHD) under the Ministry of Construction in Yangon Region will be sold this month under a home loan with a low interest rate, the department notified.
A total of 2,189 prospective buyers who have a deposit of K3 million and over, with the Construction, Housing, and Infrastructure Development Bank (CHID) until end-December 2023 are entitled to purchase the apartment units and can make registration through direct messaging the DUHD Sale Housing Facebook page between 10 and 14 June within working hours (9 am to 4:30 pm). The applicants must provide their name, father’s name, citizenship scrutiny card, housing name, building types and the CHID Bank’s down payment serial number.
They are asked to consider which building they want to apply for. Each bank account owner can apply for once. Applicants are not entitled to select the unit and floor themselves.
The drawing lots system will be practised in order to follow the CHID Bank’s list. Buyers will be selected on 21 June under the drawing lots system.
