Strong market demand boosts chickpea prices in Mandalay after Thadingyut festival
Sources from Mandalay report that prices of chickpea have risen following the Thadingyut festival due to increased demand from both foreign and domestic markets. Varieties available in the Mandalay market include V2, V7, 929, and Burmese Bengle gram. A 3-basket bag of V2 chickpea is priced at K312,000, while V7 chickpea is priced at K330,000, reflecting strong market activity.
U Soe Win Myint, the owner of Soe Win Myint commodity centre, noted: “Sales of various types of Indian Bengal gram are thriving. Compared to last year, farmers are securing better prices, and this year’s harvest is promising. India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan are key importers. Chickpea is a popular ingredient in Myanmar cuisine, valued for its nutritional content and flavour. With the cultivation season underway, farmers are actively growing it, and the strong prices should encourage more production”.
